WHALER CO-CAPTAINS TERRY and FOURNIER SHOOT DOWN LONDON, 5-4
PLYMOUTH – Last season, Plymouth Whalers Chris Terry and Andrew Fournier were contributing members of a championship team. This season, Terry and Fournier are veteran co-captains of a team defending a championship.
Terry scored three goals (12-13-14), an assist and a shootout goal and Fournier added a goal (team-leading 19th) and two assists and then decided the game in a shootout as the Whalers defeated the London Knights, 5-4, in an Ontario Hockey League game played Saturday night at Compuware Arena.
A sellout crowd of 3,778 watched the game – Plymouth’s third sellout of the season and the team’s second consecutive sellout.
Plymouth is now 13-8-1-0, good for 27 points and third place in the OHL’s West Division. London is 13-8-1-0, good for 27 points and second place in the OHL Midwest.
Akim Aliu scored twice for London and now has three on the season. Tony Romano (7) and Jadran Beljo (13) also scored for London.
Plymouth built a 4-2 lead after forty minutes of play on Terry’s hat trick and Fournier’s goal, but the Knights tied the game in the third period on Aliu's goal from the left goal line at 12:51 and Beljo’s equalizer at 19:50 with the London goaltender pulled Steve Mason pulled for the extra attacker. After a scoreless overtime, Terry and Fournier decided the game in the shootout.
Terry scored on Mason in the first shot of the shootout when he faked a forehand and stuffed a backhand by Mason. After Plymouth goaltender Jeremy Smith stopped London’s Andrew Wilkins and Beljo, Fournier won the game with the same kind of shot that was successful when he decided a shootout Oct. 18 in Windsor – he rifled a slap shot past Mason from the hash marks.
The Whalers play in London on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the John Labatt Centre.
Plymouth returns home all of next week, hosting Saginaw next Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. at Compuware Arena, hosting Sault Ste. Marie next Friday at 2:00 p.m. and completing the home stand next Saturday, Nov. 24 at 7:05 p.m. against Sudbury. Tickets can be purchased for all Plymouth games by calling the Compuware Arena at (734) 453-8400 or by going to Ticketmaster at www.ticketmaster.com.
