ANOTHER BLUE COLLAR EFFORT NETS SIXTH STRAIGHT WIN FOR PLYMOUTH
PLYMOUTH, MI – Goaltender Jeremy Smith stopped 29-of-31 shots and Chris Terry and Andrew Fournier scored a goal and two assists each as the Plymouth Whalers defeated the Guelph Storm, 4-2, in an Ontario Hockey League game played Saturday night at Compuware Arena.
AJ Jenks (12) and Brett Bellemore (3) added single goals for Plymouth. Taylor Beck (3) and Drew Doughty (6) scored for Guelph.
The Whalers have won six games in a row and stand at 12-6-1-0, good for third place in the OHL West. Guelph is now 8-9-3-0.
Smith (Brownstown) was the game’s first star for the second straight game. He stopped 37 shots Friday night in the Whalers’ 3-0 victory over Mississauga and came into tonight’s game with two straight shutouts. Smith – a second round pick of the Nashville Predators – had his shutout string stopped at 144:49 when Beck scored in the first period to tie the game at 1-1. Smith had a shutout streak of 151:37 last season between Oct. 13-29, 2006.
Terry scored his 11th goal of the year at 19:11 of the first period to give Plymouth the lead when he cut from the right boards across to the left wing and stuffed a shot past Guelph goaltender Thomas McCollum. Fournier scored at 0:21 of the second period when he wired a one-timer from the right faceoff dot for his team-leading 17th goal of the season to give the Whalers a 3-1 lead.
Jenks gave the Whalers a 4-1 lead at 5:57 with a shorthanded effort when he stripped the puck from a Guelph defender at the Storm blue line. Doughty completed the scoring for Guelph when he ripped a shot from the slot past a screened Smith at 16:25 of the third period.
Plymouth’s penalty killers have been outstanding, coming into the game going 45-for-45 dating back to Oct. 26. They killed off six more before Doughty’s goal for a total of 51. In all, Plymouth penalty killers have gone 52-for-54 over their last seven games. The Whalers are 6-1-0-0 during that stretch.
The Whalers are back at home next Friday against Windsor and next Saturday against London. Both games start at 7:05 p.m. Tickets can be purchased for all Plymouth games by calling the Compuware Arena at (734) 453-8400 or by going to Ticketmaster at www.ticketmaster.com.
