THIRD PERIOD OUTBURST FUELS KINGSTON’S 6-2 WIN OVER PLYMOUTH
Frontenacs pelt Whalers with 57 shots on goal; Plymouth now 15-13-0-0
PLYMOUTH, MI — The Kingston Frontenacs extended a 3-2 lead after forty minutes of play with three unanswered goals in the third period to defeat the Plymouth Whalers, 6-2, in an Ontario Hockey League game played Saturday evening before 2,336 at Compuware Arena.
Plymouth is now 15-13-0-0. Kingston improves to 13-14-0-2.
The Whalers beat Kingston, 4-1, last Sunday at the K-Rock Centre in Kingston. Tonight’s game was a direct contrast as the Frontenacs pelted Plymouth goaltender Scott Wedgwood with 57 shots on goal.
Derek Froats (6-7) and Zack Harnden (9-10) scored two goals each for Kingston, while Mike Farrell (7) and Nathan Moon (13) scored one each for the Frontenacs. Joe Gaynor (7) and Tyler J. Brown (3) replied for Plymouth.
The Whaless Tyler J. Brown beats defender Tyler Mort and scores on Kingston's John Cullen in the first period. |
Kingston never trailed in the game, but the Whalers came back from deficits of 1-0 in the first period and 2-1 in the second period to tie the game twice. Harnden’s first of the game came at 2:05 of the first period when Tyler Mort’s shot from the right point was knocked down in the right circle and caromed directly to Harnden, who scored from the right circle. Gaynor tied the game for Plymouth at 18:09, following up the play in front of the Kingston goal and beating Frontenacs goaltender John Cullen on a rebound just outside the blue crease area. The game was tied, 1-1, after one period.
Farrell scored on a rebound on the left wing side of the Plymouth goal at 8:51 after Wedgewood made the original stop on a point shot from Jaroslav Kruzik, but the Whalers tied the game at 2-2 at 17:06 when Brown followed up Ryan Hayes’ long shot from the penalty box area to score on a rebound after Cullen made the save on Hayes’ shot. Moon came right back 1:15 later to restore Kingston’s lead, redirecting a rebound on the right wing side of the Plymouth goal past Wedgewood. Kingston led, 3-2, after forty minutes.
Frontenacs put the game away in the third period on Froats’ pair at 1:26 and 6:19 respectively. Harnden finished the scoring at 17:21. All three goals were a result of good Kingston pressure deep in the Plymouth zone.
Kingston outshot Plymouth, 57-40.
Plymouth is back in action on Wednesday, hosting Saginaw at 7:05pm (88.1FM, 7pm). The Whalers will then play in Saginaw on Friday before returning home next Saturday to host Sault Ste. Marie in Plymouth’s annual Teddy Bear Toss game.
