PLYMOUTH, MI Luke Pither’s second goal of the game at 11:05 of the third period snapped a 2-2 tie and the Barrie Colts defeated the Plymouth Whalers, 4-2, in an Ontario Hockey League game played Friday night at Compuware Arena in front of 2,307 fans.

Barrie – the top team in the OHL’s Eastern Conference and the third-rated team in the Canadian Hockey League – improved to 35-6-0-1. Plymouth is now 24-20-0-1.

Pither – the game’s first star – now has 27 goals on the season. Stefan Della Rovere (13) and Kyle Clifford (15) also scored for Barrie. Michal Jordan (10) and AJ Jenks (15) replied for Plymouth.

Although the Whalers battled the Colts in overcoming a 1-0 deficit with a pair goals 57 seconds apart to take a 2-1 lead in the second period, National Hockey League scouts from 12 different teams saw why Barrie is just one point behind the top-ranked Windsor Spitfires. Until Clifford gave Barrie a 4-2 lead at 13:21 of the third period, there was never more than a one-goal differential the rest of the game.

Della Rovere opened the scoring at 19:16 of an evenly played first period with a power play goal, threading a shot from just outside the blue crease on the right wing side of the Plymouth goal with a shot that Whalers goaltender Matt Hackett got a piece of, but trickled over his shoulder. Barrie led, 1-0, after one period of play.

Plymouth came back to take a 2-1 lead in the second period. Robbie Czarnik set up the first Plymouth goal at 7:38, keeping the puck alive along the left boards in the Barrie zone and finding Michal Jordan at the right point. Jordan ripped the puck past Barrie goaltender Mavric Parks, who appeared to be out of position after colliding with his own defenseman.

Jenks took advantage of a giveaway in the Barrie zone, picking up the loose puck at the hashmarks and beating Parks with the shot at 8:35.

But Barrie tied the game at 2-2 at 13:54 on Pither’s first of the evening. With traffic in front of Hackett, Pither scored on backhand shot from the left circle that slid on the ice and was tucked inside the far post.

Barrie re-took the lead at 3-2 at 11:05 of the third period at the end of a power play. With Jenks coming out of the penalty box, Pither ripped a shot from the right point that ended up top shelf. Clifford finished the scoring, converting Bryan Cameron’s pass from the right hashmark and scoring from the left wing at 13:21.

Barrie outshot Plymouth, 34-29.

The Whalers are back home tomorrow night against Niagara at 7:05pm at Compuware Arena (7pm, WSDP, 88.1FM) and will remain home Monday at 2pm against Windsor.
