Whalers Lose Regular Season Finale, Draw Guelph in First Round of Playoffs

PLYMOUTH - The Sarnia Sting exploded for four unaswered goals in the third period and went on to defeat the Plymouth Whalers, 6-2, in the regular season finale for both teams played before 3,704 Saturday night at Compuware Arena.
 
The Whalers finish the regular season at 47-18-2-1, good for 97 points.  Plymouth finished first in the West Division and second in the Western Conference, two points behind London (49-18-0-1), who defeated Erie, 3-0, tonight.  Sarnia finishes at 34-27-2-5.
 
Tyler Brown led the Sarnia attack with a pair of goals (20-21).  Julian Luciani (2), Brett Thompson (32), Craig Hottot (20) and Reid Boucher (28) all scored one goal each for the Sting.  Stefan Noesen (38) and Rickard Rakell (28) scored single goals for Plymouth.
 
As the second seed, Plymouth will start the playoffs next Friday in the best-four-of-seven Western Conference quarterfinal series against the seventh seed in the Western Conference - the Guelph Storm (31-31-2-4).  The first game of the series will be played next Friday, March 23, at 7:05 pm at Compuware Arena.

The Whalers have made the OHL playoffs for 21 consecutive years, a current OHL record.  Plymouth did not make the playoffs in their inaugural season as as first-year expansion team in 1990 and has made the playoffs every year since the 1991-92 season.
