MISSISSAUGA’S DEPTH POWERS MAJORS TO 5-0 WIN OVER WHALERS

Plymouth now 5-5-1-1, hits the road in Erie on Wednesday, Niagara on Thursday

PLYMOUTHThe Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors will be hosting the Canadian Hockey League’s 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup next May at the Hershey Centre in the Greater Toronto area. Tonight, the Majors played like a team headed to the Memorial Cup with a 5-0 victory over the Plymouth Whalers in an Ontario Hockey League game played at Compuware Arena.

Mississauga is now 8-2-0-0. Plymouth is 5-5-1-1.

The Majors led 1-0 after one period, 2-0 after forty minutes, and pulled away with three unanswered goals in the third period. Chris Doyle led the Majors attack with a pair of goals (2-3), Chicago-draft Rob Flick scored a goal (5) and two assists, veteran defenseman Marc Cantin had a goal (3) with three assists, and Carolina-draft Justin Shugg scored a goal (4) and contributed an assist.

Mississauga goaltender J.P. Anderson pitched a 32-save shutout – his second of the season – and was solid all night. His best save of the game came in the first period with Mississauga leading, 1-0, when he robbed Stefan Noesen on a re-direct in front of the Majors' goal.

Flick scored on the game’s first shot just 14 seconds into the game to give Mississauga at 1-0 lead, putting the shot top shelf from the right circle past Plymouth goaltender Scott Wedgewood. Mississauga outshot Plymouth, 10-8, in the first period.

Plymouth pressured in the second period, outshooting the Majors, 15-11, but Anderson played solidly and Mississauga scored the only goal of the period on Doyle’s shot from the point that caromed off bodies and past Wedgewood at 11:54.

The Majors pulled away on third-period goals by Shugg (power play at 2:30), Cantin (hard slot from the high slot under the bar) at 6:24, and Doyle again at 14:43.

Plymouth outshot Mississauga, 32-26.
