Greyhounds take down Whalers 5-3

Updated to include audio clips and interviews.

SAULT STE. MARIE:  The Plymouth Whalers were unable to defeat the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the Essar Centre Friday Night, dropping the contest, 5-3. The loss drops the Whalers to 7-6-2-0 while the Greyhounds improve to 10-5-0-0.

Matt Murray of the Soo collected the win in net, stopping 28 of 31 shots.  Scott Wedgewood was in net for Plymouth, 30 saves on 34shots.

After a scoreless, the Soo got on the board first with a goal from David Elsner (2) at 7:22 of the second period from Durocher and Curcuruto.

Jamie Devane (5) evened the score with a powerplay goal at 9:27 from Beau Schmitz and J.T. Miller. Miller - at the top of the right circle - hit Devane with a hard pass and Devane re-driected the puck past Murray.  Listen to the goal.

Corey Durocher, who assisted on Elsner's goal, quickly answered with a goal of his own at 10:59 of the second from Schwindt and Elsner.  Wedgewood stopped Elsner's shot from the left circle, but the puck trickled free and Durocher scored from just outside the right goal post.

However Mitchell Heard (8) answered from Andy Bathgate and Beau Schmitz 0:15 seconds into a powerplay at 19:23 of the second period.  Bathgate skated the puck deep to the left goal line in the Soo zone and fed it across the blue crease to Heard at the right side of the goal.  Listen to the goal.

Coming out after two periods with the score tied, Sault Ste. Marie took the lead again just 26 seconds into the third period with Nick Cousins' 10th of the year from Ryan Sproul.  Cousins picked up a loose puck with traffic in front of Wedgewood and scored with a backhand.

Power play goals being the theme of the night, J.T. Miller beat Matt Murray high to the glove side under the crossbar on a slapshot for his eighth of the year, from Schmitz and Devane to pull Plymouth even once again.  Miller faked a shot from the top of the right circle, moved to the dot and ripped the shot.  Listen to the goal.

The Soo continued to respond and took the lead for good at 10:22 of the 3rd period. David Elsner scored his second of the game, from Durocher and Dubchak.  Durocher carried the puck wide left wing into the Plymouth zone and got the shot on Wedgewood, who made the save but Elsner snapped home the rebound.

Brandon Alderson added the empty-netter with 48 seconds left to seal the game at 5-3.

Leading scorers for Plymouth Schmitz (0-3) (the game's second star), Miller (1-1), and Devane (1-1).

Plymouth returns to action tomorrow night at home against the Kingston Frontenacs at 7:05PM at Compuware Arena.  Tickets can be purchased online at http://plymouthwhalers.com/buytickets.  The Whalers will be hosting Trick-or-Treat night, where children can trick-or-treat from numerous organizations beginning at 8:00PM inside Compuware Arena.

A LOOK BACK: The 'Hounds celebrated their 1993 championship team on Friday, bringing back five members of a team that won the Memorial Cup.  Plymouth Director of Communications Pete Krupsky interviwed the Soo's play-by-play voice at that time, Gino Cavallo, about that team and their rivalry with the Whalers back then, when the Whalers were known as the Detroit Jr. Red Wings.

Listen to the interview.

1992-93 was a special year for the Jr. Red Wings.  In just their third season of existence, the Jr. Red Wings challenged the Soo for the Emms Division title, finishing the season with the same number of points as Sault Ste. Marie, but had less wins.

In 1993, Pete Krupsky interviewed Jr. Wings General Manager Jim Rutherford about the growth of the team, the trade that brought Kevin Brown to the Jr. Wings and the upcoming OHL Trade Deadline.  Listen to Part 1 and then Part 2.

*Whalers Pink Out NHL Jersey Auction:  To continue the Pink Out campaign, the Whalers have an online NHL autographed jersey auction that includes alums Tyler Seguin, Chad Larose, James Wisniewski, David Legwand.  Legwand's teammates Ryan Suter, Shea Weber and Pekka Rinne also donated a NHL autographed jersey for the cause.  Visit the Whalers auction site now to see all the NHL autographed jerseys and Whalers jerseys available.
